How to make dumplings for stew:
Mix and sift dry ingredients. Work in butter with tips of fingers or cut in with 2 knives. Add milk gradually. Use more if necessary to make a soft dough. Round bits of dough up on teaspoon and push on top of stew. Quickly adjust cover and steam for about 12 minutes. Do not open until the time is out or the dumplings will not be light. The foregoing recipe was contributed by Caroline Abrams, Scott Abrams and Allison Abrams. The "recipe" came from a cookbook belonging to their grandmother, Mrs. M. E. Abrams, entitled, "Selected Recipes That Keep The Family Happy." The cookbook was copyrighted in 1924 by McCormick and Company who apparently made Bee Brand spice and published a Bee Brand Manual of Cookery. The paperback cookbook was a complimentary gift to the customers of Scott-Abrams Company of Whitmire, South Carolina.
