Ingredients/Components

  • all-purpose flour - 1 c
  • yellow corn meal - 2/3 c
  • sugar
  • onion salt - 1 tsp
  • baking powder - 1/2 tsp
  • dash of pepper - 1 item
  • shortening - 2 Tbsp
  • egg, slightly beaten - 1 item
  • spicy mustard - 1 item
  • milk - 2/3 c
  • oil - 1 item
  • frankfurters - 1 lb

How to make corn dogs:

You will also need wooden skewers.

Combine flour, corn meal, sugar, onion salt, baking powder and pepper in a large bowl. Cut in shortening until particles are the size of coarse crumbs. Combine egg, 1 tablespoon mustard and milk. Add to dry ingredients. Stir until blended.

Heat 3-inches of oil in deep saucepan to 365° on deep fat frying thermometer. Dry off frankfurters. Insert skewer; spread or dip in batter. Put into hot oil and fry 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown. May serve on skewers with more mustard for dipping. Makes 8 to 10 servings.
