How to make chop suey:

*May substitute 2 pounds cubed beef.

Brown meats in hot fat. Add soy sauce and 1 cup water. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add about 1 quart more water. Add celery, onions and molasses; simmer 1 1/2 hours. Stir occasionally to keep from burning.

Blend cornstarch and 1/4 cup water; stir into meat mixture. Add water chestnuts and mushrooms. Heat through; season to taste. Serve over cooked rice or Chinese noodles.

My mother usually served this dish to all our friends on New Year's Day.
