Chop suey
Ingredients/Components
- cornstarch - 2 Tbsp
- water - 1 c
- molasses - 4 Tbsp
- soy sauce - 6 Tbsp
- large diced onion - 1 item
- can water chestnuts, sliced - 1 1/4
- can mushrooms optional - 1 oz
- veal, cubed* - 3/4 lb
- pork, cubed* - 1/2 lb
- beef, cubed* - 1/2 lb
- large bunch celery, cut in 1/2 inch pieces - 1 item
How to make chop suey:
*May substitute 2 pounds cubed beef.Brown meats in hot fat. Add soy sauce and 1 cup water. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add about 1 quart more water. Add celery, onions and molasses; simmer 1 1/2 hours. Stir occasionally to keep from burning.
Blend cornstarch and 1/4 cup water; stir into meat mixture. Add water chestnuts and mushrooms. Heat through; season to taste. Serve over cooked rice or Chinese noodles.
My mother usually served this dish to all our friends on New Year's Day.
