  • pkg - 1 lb
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • water
  • bay leaf - 1 item
  • peppercorns - 1/4 tsp
  • thyme leaves - 1 item
  • medium onion, chopped - 1 item
  • carrots, thinly sliced - 2 item
  • sprig parsley - 1 item
  • ham bone with meat left on - 1 item

How to make split pea soup:

In Dutch oven or large pot over medium-high heat, heat ham bone, split peas, carrots, onion and 5 1/2 cups water to boiling. Tie parsley, peppercorns, thyme and bay leaf in a cheesecloth bag. Add to ham bone mixture. Reduce heat to low; simmer covered 1 hour. Discard spice bag. Add salt to taste. Remove bone from soup; cut off meat and return only meat to soup. Makes 7 cups.
