Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1-1/2 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • flour - 2-1/4 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 2 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • pinch of salt - 1 item
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • dash of salt - 1 item
  • Crisco - 1/2 c
  • each - 2 bottles
  • Add eggs
  • margarine, not melted - 1/2 c

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream sugar and shortening until creamy. Add eggs. Beat well. Add flour with salt alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla. Make a paste of food color and cocoa. Add to batter and beat well. Mix vinegar and soda and add to batter, mixing well. Makes three layers. Bake 30 minutes at 350°.CRISCO ICING1 c. milk5 Tbsp. flour1/2 c. margarine, not melted1/2 c. Crisco1 c. sugar dash of salt1 tsp. vanilla Whip until smooth with milk and flour mixture.
