Ingredients/Components

  • milk - 2 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 1 Tbsp
  • margarine - 1/4 c
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • bread crumbs - 1/4 c
  • potatoes - 2 lb
  • medium onion, chopped - 1 item
  • sharp Cheddar cheese, grated - 2 c

How to make au gratin potatoes:

Peel and cut potatoes into thin slices. Cook and stir onion in margarine in 2-quart saucepan until onion is tender. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until mixture is bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in milk and 1 1/2 cups of the cheese. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir for 1 minute. Place potatoes in 1 1/2-quart casserole. Pour cheese sauce over potatoes. Cook, uncovered, in 325° oven for 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Mix remaining cheese and bread crumbs. Sprinkle over potatoes. Cook, uncovered, until top is brown and bubbly, 15 to 20 minutes longer.
