Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1 tsp
  • butter - 3/4 c
  • water - 2 qt
  • Worcestershire sauce - 1 tsp
  • dry white wine - 1 c
  • dash of black pepper - 1 item
  • beef bouillon cubes - 6 item
  • red onions, peeled and halved - 2 lb
  • dash of white pepper - 1 item
  • loaf French bread - 1/2 item
  • chilled Swiss cheese - 8 oz

How to make french onion soup:

Slice onions. Melt butter in a 4-quart Dutch oven. Slowly cook onions in butter until lightly browned, about 20 minutes. Add bouillon cubes, water and wine to onions. Cover and simmer 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add Worcestershire sauce and salt. Add white and black peppers to soup. Stir. Shred cheese.

To serve, place a thin slice of French bread into the bottom of each individual ovenware serving bowl. Ladle soup into bowls. Top with layer of shredded cheese. Place under broiler until cheese melts. Serve.
