Ingredients/Components

  • apple cider vinegar - 3 c
  • crushed red pepper - 1 item
  • garlic - 1 item
  • cucumbers - 1 item
  • canning salt - 3/4 c
  • powdered alum - 1 item
  • dill or dill seed - 1 item
  • 1 gal - 4 qt

How to make dill pickles:

Bring water, vinegar and canning salt to a boil. Wash cucumbers. Drop in enough cucumbers to fill a quart. Stir these around when they change color. Put into jar.

Keep jars in a pan of hot water. Fold a rag for bottom of pan to keep jars from breaking. In each jar, put a pinch of powdered alum (about 1/8 teaspoon), 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper, a sprig of dill or dill seed and 2 or 3 bulbs garlic. Cover with hot liquid; seal. Liquid should be kept at a boil and jars and lids should be kept hot.
