Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 1 c
  • water - 2/3 c
  • oil - 1 Tbsp
  • baking powder
  • lemon juice - 1 tsp
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • ice water - 1 item
  • cayenne pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • salad oil for frying - 1 item
  • or 4 large onions - 3 item

How to make french fried onion rings:

Peel onions and slice about 3/8-inch thick. Separate into rings. Put in a covered bowl; cover with ice water. Keep in refrigerator until ready to fry. Combine egg, salt, baking powder, water, flour, 1 tablespoon oil, lemon juice and pepper; stir until smooth. Heat oil to 375°. Remove onions from water and dip into batter. Fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Note: You can use 2 to 3 cups of buttermilk instead of water to soak onion rings.
