  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • all-purpose flour, sifted
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • nutmeg - 1/2 tsp
  • baking soda - 1/2 tsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • brown sugar, firmly packed - 1 c
  • allspice - 1/4 tsp
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • apples, chopped - 1 c

How to make apple cookies:

Cream sugar and shortening until very light, then add beaten egg. Mix and sift dry ingredients and add to creamed sugar mixture. Stir in apples. Drop by balls on greased cookie sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 375°.

This recipe was used in World War II to send cookies to G.I.'s on overseas duty. Today I send to my granddaughter at school in Ohio. They stay fresh a long while.
