Ingredients/Components

  • pepper - 1 item
  • chopped onion - 1 item
  • chopped celery - 1 c
  • bay leaf - 1 item
  • sliced carrots - 1/2 c
  • thyme - 1/4 tsp
  • cubed potatoes - 1 c
  • dried peas - 2 c
  • water 8 c - 2 qt
  • ham bone with ham - 1 item

How to make split pea soup:

Wash peas. Put in water to boil. Simmer 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand 1 hour. Add ham bone, vegetables, bay leaf and thyme. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until peas are soft. Remove bone. Cut off meat and dice. Return meat to soup. Season to taste with pepper. Makes about 2 quarts.
