Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • water - 2/3 c
  • melted margarine - 1/2 c
  • soda - 1/2 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1/2 c
  • baking powder - 2 tsp
  • egg, well beaten - 1 item
  • grated onion - 1 c
  • yellow corn meal - 2 c
  • Creole seasoning - 1 tsp
  • medium green pepper, finely chopped - 1 item
  • plus 3 Tbsp - 1/2 c
  • jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely chopped - 2 item

How to make peppery hush puppies:

Combine dry ingredients; add buttermilk, water, margarine and eggs. Mix well. Stir in onion and peppers. Carefully drop batter by teaspoon into hot oil (375°). Fry 3 to 5 minutes, turning once, until hush puppies are golden brown. Drain well on paper towels. Yields about 2 1/2 dozen.
