Orange nut bread
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 c
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- flour - 3 c
- water - 1/2 c
- baking powder - 1 Tbsp
- firmly packed brown sugar - 1/2 c
- egg, beaten - 1 item
- slivered nuts - 1 c
- zest of 3 oranges, sliced fine*
How to make orange nut bread:
Boil the orange zest in a little salted water until tender; drain. Combine sugar, water and prepared orange zest. Boil for 10 minutes; cool. Sift dry ingredients and add egg, milk, nuts and sugar-zest syrup. Place in a greased 5 x 9-inch loaf pan and bake at 300° for 15 minutes. Increase heat to 350° and bake for 60 minutes. Test with toothpick for doneness.*Zest is orange part of the rind.
