Ingredients/Components

  • milk
  • shortening - 1 Tbsp
  • sugar
  • salt
  • rapid rise yeast
  • flour

How to make mom's hot rolls:

Heat milk until it's warm; add sugar and shortening until shortening melts. Prepare yeast in 1/2-1 c. water, let rise and add to shortening and milk mixture. When cooled add enough flour to form thin batter. Let stand one hour. Add enough flour to make stiff dough. Put on floured board and knead until smooth, adding flour in small amounts at a time. Put in greased bowl. Let stand until doubled (helps to put near warm area like top of stove, cover with saran wrap). Roll out and cut out - put into pie plates, muffins or etc.

Can refrigerate. Cover with saran wrap.

Remove from refrigerator. Raise at room temperature (about three hours). Bake at 400° until brown on top and light brown on bottom. Remove and brush with butter. Enjoy. Makes between 3 -4 pie plates full. I usually make mine ahead of time and refrigerate. However, you can bake right away. Just let raise one hour or so after you have put them into the pie plates or muffin tins.
