Farmhouse pork and apple pie
Ingredients/Components
- bacon, cut in 2-inch pieces - 1 lb
- pork, cubed - 3 lb
- tart apples, peeled and chopped - 3 item
- salt - 1 tsp
- apple cider - 1 c
- medium potatoes, peeled and cubed - 4 item
- medium onions, chopped - 3 item
- flour - 3/4 c
- rubbed sage - 1 tsp
- nutmeg - 1/2 tsp
- pepper - 1/4 tsp
- water - 1/2 c
- milk - 1/2 c
- butter, divided - 5 Tbsp
How to make farmhouse pork and apple pie:
Cook bacon in an ovenproof 12-inch skillet until crisp. Remove to paper towel to drain. Saute onions until tender; remove and set aside.Dust pork lightly with flour. Brown, a third at a time, in drippings, adding oil if needed. Remove from heat and drain. To pork, add bacon, onions, apples, sage, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Stir in cider and water. Cover and bake at 325° for 2 hours or until pork is tender.
Cook potatoes until tender, drain and mash with milk and 3 tablespoons butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Remove skillet from oven and spread potatoes over pork mixture. Brush with remaining melted butter. Broil 6-inches from heat for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley.
