Ingredients/Components

  • flour - 1 c
  • yellow corn meal - 2/3 c
  • sugar - 2 Tbsp
  • baking powder
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • dry mustard - 1/2 tsp
  • shortening - 2 Tbsp
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • milk - 3/4 c
  • wieners I use cheese dogs - 1 lb
  • cooking oil for deep fryer - 1 item

How to make corn dogs:

In a bowl, combine flour, corn meal, sugar, baking powder, salt and dry mustard. Cut in shortening, using two knives scissor fashion, until mixture becomes coarse crumbs. Mix egg and milk. Add to dry mixture, mixing well. Insert wooden skewers in one of wieners. Heat oil to 375°. Coat wieners with batter. If batter is too thick, add 1 to 2 tablespoons milk. Place 2 or 3 wieners in oil for 3 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot with ketchup or mustard (optional).

I put batter in a tall plastic glass to easily cover hot dogs with batter.
