Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/3 c
  • vinegar - 3 c
  • celery seed
  • cloves garlic, chopped - 3 item
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric
  • green peppers, sliced - 2 item
  • sliced cucumbers - 4 qt
  • medium sliced white onions - 4 item

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Do not peel cucumbers. Slice. Add onions, peppers and garlic. Add salt and cover with cracker ice and mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours and drain. Do not rinse. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over cucumber mixture. Heat just to boiling. Seal in hot jars. Makes about 7 pints.
