Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/2 c
  • vinegar - 5 c
  • ground cloves - 1/2 Tbsp
  • celery seed - 1 tsp
  • mustard seed - 1 Tbsp
  • green peppers - 2 item
  • turmeric
  • onions - 8 item
  • sliced cucumbers - 5 qt

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Wash cucumber slices. Add sliced onions and shredded peppers. Mix with salt in center, bury a quart of chopped cucumbers. Cover with plate and wait. Let stand 3 hours. Drain thoroughly.

Make syrup with remaining ingredients. Boil and add cukes. Slow heat. Bring to scald point. Padde after with wooden spoon. Do not boil!!! Pack in jars and seal.
