Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 2 c
- soda - 1 tsp
- buttermilk
- pinch of salt - 1 item
- dark brown sugar
- egg whites - 2 item
- Crisco - 1 c
- cream of tartar - 1/4 tsp
- dark Karo syrup - 2 Tbsp
- pecans, finely chopped - 1/2 c
- pinch of soda - 1 item
- walnut flavoring - 1 tsp
- eggs save 2 whites for icing - 5 item
- can walnuts, finely chopped - 1 item
- flour if plain, add 1 tsp - 3 c
- Stir in other ingredients, saving half the nuts and 2 egg whites for the icing and using half the nuts in the cake batter
How to make walnut cake:
Cream together shortening and sugar. Stir in other ingredients, saving half the nuts and 2 egg whites for the icing and using half the nuts in the cake batter. Bake in four layers for 20 to 25 minutes at 375°.Icing:1/3 c. water2 egg whites2 Tbsp. dark Karo syrup1/4 tsp. cream of tartar pinch of soda pinch of salt1 1/2 c. dark brown sugar Beat on low speed for 2 minutes to mix well. Place over boiling water. Cook and beat at high speed for 7 minutes. Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon walnut flavoring. Stir well. Spread between layers and on top and sides.
