Ingredients/Components

  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1/4 tsp
  • flour
  • brown sugar - 1/2 c
  • baking powder - 1 tsp
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • ginger - 1 tsp
  • hot water - 3/4 c
  • dark molasses Brer Rabbit - 1/2 c
  • shortening Crisco or lard - 1/2 c

How to make old-fashioned gingerbread:

Mix the first 4 ingredients well. Then mix dry ingredients with first mixture. Do not beat too long. Last add hot water and mix well. Put into small 8 x 8-inch pan. Bake at 350° for approximately 35 minutes or until done.
