  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • butter - 1/2 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • all-purpose flour
  • large eggs - 2 item
  • molasses - 1/2 c
  • hot water - 1 c
  • ground cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • ground ginger - 1 tsp
  • ground allspice - 1 tsp

How to make old-fashioned gingerbread:

Preheat the oven to 350°. Beat butter at medium speed of an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs and molasses, mixing well. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients. Add to butter mixture alternately with hot water, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix after each addition. Pour batter into a greased and floured 8-inch square pan. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Serve with whipped cream. Makes 9 servings.
