Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1 Tbsp
  • salt
  • can tomato paste - 1 oz
  • small onion, chopped - 1 item
  • olive oil - 2 Tbsp
  • can tomatoes - 1 oz
  • large garlic clove, minced - 1 item
  • chopped fresh basil or 2 tsp - 2 Tbsp

How to make marinara sauce:

About 30 minutes before serving, in a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat in hot oil, cook onion and garlic until tender, stirring occasionally.

Stir in sugar, basil, salt, tomatoes with their liquid and tomato paste. Heat to boiling, stirring to break up tomatoes. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer 20 minutes to blend flavors. Stir occasionally. Makes 2 1/2 cups.
