- vanilla - 1 tsp
- granulated sugar - 1 c
- salt
- flour
- butter - 1 c
- water - 1 c
- cocoa
- buttermilk - 1 c
- baking soda - 1 tsp
- shortening - 1/2 c
- sifted cake flour
- red food coloring
- whole egg - 1 item
How to make red velvet cake:
Frosting:3 heaping Tbsp. flour1 c. water1 c. granulated sugar1 c. butter1 tsp. vanilla Cream shortening and sugar. Add the eggs and cream until blended. Mix the food coloring and cocoa; add to the creamed mixture. Sift soda and cake flour. Add the dry ingredients and liquids alternately. Fold, but do not beat. Bake in three 8-inch cake pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes. This cake can be baked in two larger pans and then split, making a flour layer cake.Frosting: Cook the flour and water until slightly clear. Cool for 2 hours or more. Cream sugar and vanilla. Add to flour mixture and beat until light and fluffy. Cream with electric mixer until like whipped cream.
