Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1 tsp
  • eggs - 2 item
  • margarine or butter - 1 item
  • dash of salt - 1 item
  • cinnamon or to taste - 1 tsp
  • dash of vanilla - 1 item
  • splash of milk - 1 item
  • to 1/2 loaf French or Italian bread day-old is best - 1/3 item

How to make french toast:

In shallow bowl or nonmetal pan, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla and salt. Cut bread into 1-inch slices on the diagonal to make larger slices. Soak bread in egg mixture until all slices are evenly coated.

Melt 1 to 2 tablespoons margarine in frypan over medium heat. Saute bread slices slowly, turning to brown both sides well. Be careful not to turn heat too high or sugar in mixture will burn toast. Add additional butter or margarine to the pan as needed (using a nonstick pan and lower heat will help to minimize the amount of butter needed).

Serve with butter and maple syrup or other desired toppings. Yields 2 to 4 servings.
