- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- chopped pecans - 1/2 c
- milk - 2 3
- salt - 1 tsp
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 tsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- margarine or butter - 3 Tbsp
- vinegar - 1 tsp
- shortening - 1/2 c
- dash of salt - 1 item
- sifted cake flour
- 8 oz - 1 pkg
- red food color - 2 oz
- Cream shortening, sugar and eggs
How to make red velvet cake:
Mix soda and vinegar, set aside. Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa in a large bowl. Add the egg and sugar mixture to the paste. Add the buttermilk along with the salt, sifted cake flour and vanilla. Fold in vinegar and soda. Bake in two 9-inch layer pans at 350° for 30 minutes after cooling.Frosting:4 c. powdered sugar1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, soft dash of salt2 to 3 Tbsp. milk1/2 c. chopped pecans3 Tbsp. margarine or butter Mix powdered sugar, cream cheese, butter, salt and milk until smooth and creamy.
