Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/4 c
  • salt - 1/8 tsp
  • cornstarch - 1 Tbsp
  • cold water - 2 3
  • all-purpose flour - 3/4 item
  • margarine - 3 Tbsp
  • ground cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • skim milk - 1 item
  • dash of ground nutmeg - 1 item
  • thinly sliced peeled apples 2 lb - 6 c

How to make deep dish apple pie:

Place apples in 10 x 6 x 2-inch baking dish. In small mixing bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon; set aside 1 teaspoon of mixture. Stir cornstarch and salt into remaining sugar mixture and mix well. Sprinkle evenly over apples in dish.

In medium mixing bowl, stir together flour and nutmeg. Cut in margarine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the water over part of mixture; gently toss with fork. Push to side of bowl. Repeat until all is moistened. Form into a ball.

On a floured surface roll dough into a 12 x 8-inch rectangle. Cut decorative vents in pastry. Carefully place pastry on top of apples. Flute edges to sides of dish, but not over the edge. Brush pastry with milk and sprinkle with the reserved sugar mixture.

Bake at 375° oven about 40 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Serves 8; 157 calories, 5 g. fat, 0 mg. cholesterol, 84 mg. sodium.
