Ingredients/Components
- vegetable oil - 1 item
- all-purpose flour*
- sugar - 1 c
- baking powder - 3 tsp
- ground cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
- nutmeg - 1/4 tsp
- shortening - 2 Tbsp
- eggs - 2 item
- milk - 3/4 c
- Heat oil 2 to 3 inches in deep fat fryer or a heavy kettle to 375°
- boiling water - 1/3 c
- chopped nuts - 1 item
How to make cake doughnuts:
*If using self-rising flour, omit baking powder and salt.Heat oil (2 to 3 inches) in deep fat fryer or a heavy kettle to 375°. Beat 1 1/2 cups of flour and the remaining ingredients in a large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scraping occasionally, 2 minutes. Stir in remaining flour. Turn dough onto well floured cloth-covered board. Roll around lightly to coat with flour. Roll gently 3/8 inch thick. Cut with floured doughnut cutter; cook in hot oil. Turn as they rise. Cook 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on towel. Serve plain, sugared or frosted.Doughnut Glaze:1 c. powdered sugar1/3 c. boiling water chopped nuts Mix powdered sugar and boiling water. Dip warm doughnuts int warm glaze. Sprinkle with nuts, if desired. Or, shake warm doughnuts in a bag of powdered sugar or sugar and cinnamon.
