Bread and butter pickles



  • cucumbers medium size, sliced - 4 qt
  • onions, sliced
  • crushed ice - 1 2
  • turmeric
  • celery seed
  • large cloves garlic - 2 item
  • salt - 1/3 c
  • sugar
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • white vinegar - 3 c

How to make bread and butter pickles:

You will need 8 pint jars with lids.

Wash cucumbers, drain and slice into 1/8 to 1/4-inch slices. Add onion and garlic. Add salt; cover with ice and mix thoroughly. Allow to stand 3 hours. Drain; remove garlic. Combine sugar, spices and vinegar; heat just to boil. Add cucumber and onion slices. Heat 5 minutes. Pack loosely into clean, hot pint jars. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath 5 minutes. Makes 7 pints.
