Bread & butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 5 c
- salt - 1/2 c
- celery seed
- onions, sliced - 1 qt
- white vinegar - 5 c
- mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
- turmeric - 1 tsp
- thinly sliced cucumbers do not peel - 4 qt
- green peppers, cut in small pieces - 2 item
- red pepper, cut in small pieces - 1 item
How to make bread & butter pickles:
Mix together cucumbers, onions, both kinds of peppers, and salt in large bowl or roaster. Cover with ice cubes. Set aside about 3 hours. Drain. Mix vinegar, sugar, mustard seed, turmeric, and celery seed. Put over drained vegetables and put on medium heat. Bring to a boil but do not boil. Pack in warm, sterilized jars & seal.
