Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • celery seed
  • medium onions, sliced - 6 item
  • white vinegar - 3 c
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric
  • pickling salt - 1/3 c
  • sliced cucumbers - 4 qt

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Combine cucumbers, onions and salt. Cover with cold water and ice. Let soak 3 hours. Combine sugar, vinegar, turmeric, celery seed and mustard seed in a large pot. Bring to a boil. Add drained cucumbers and onions. Return to a boil. Put in hot jars. Seal jars. Yields 6 quarts or 12 pints.
