Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 Tbsp
- granulated sugar - 1 c
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- flour - 2 c
- butter - 1/2 lb
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 Tbsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- vinegar - 1 Tbsp
- shortening - 1/2 c
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- Add eggs
How to make red velvet cake:
Cream shortening with sugar. Add eggs. Combine cocoa and food coloring to make a paste. Stir into creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt together. Then with electric mixer at medium speed, add alternately with buttermilk to mixture. Blend well. Add vanilla. Combine vinegar and soda and while still foamy, add to batter. Do not beat, instead stir gently. Bake in 2 greased and floured layer cake pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.Red Velvet Cake Icing:3 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. granulated sugar1/2 lb. butter1/2 tsp. vanilla Cook flour and milk over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly. Cool. Add sugar, butter and vanilla. Beat at high speed until smooth and creamy. Spread on cooled cake. Icing will resemble whipped cream when cool.
