Bread and butter pickles

Ingredients/Components

• sugar - 5 c
• salt - 1/3 c
• vinegar - 3 c
• celery seed
• medium onions, sliced - 6 item
• mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
• turmeric
• green pepper optional - 1 item
• sliced cucumbers - 4 qt
• sweet pepper optional - 1 item

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Put salt and 2 trays of ice cubes on cucumbers, onions and peppers. Cover with cold water. Let stand 3 hours. Drain. Put on sugar, vinegar and spices. Heat just to the boiling point. Put in hot jars and seal. Makes 8 pints.
