Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • milk - 1 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • eggs, beaten - 3 item
  • all-purpose flour - 5 6
  • margarine - 1/2 c
  • warm water - 1/4 c
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • almonds - 1 item
  • active dry yeast - 1 pkg

How to make braided sweet bread:

Scald milk. Stir in sugar, margarine and salt. Cool to lukewarm. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in lukewarm milk mixture, beaten eggs and half the flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in remaining flour to make a stiff but sticky dough. Cover and let rise until doubled.

Divide dough in 6 equal parts. Form into 12-inch rolls. Braid 3 rolls together; pinch ends. Similarly braid remaining 3 rolls. Let rise again until double.

Decorate tops with whole almonds. Brush with beaten egg. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350° for 30 minutes or until nicely browned. Yields 2 loaves.

Note: This freezes well.
