  • sugar - 3/4 c
  • eggs - 10 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk
  • salt
  • flour - 10 c
  • yeast - 2 pkg
  • butter or oil - 2/3 c
  • rind of lemon optional - 1 item
  • raisins, candied fruit optional - 1 item

How to make braided easter bread:

Beat eggs until light. Add sugar and salt. Continue beating. Add dissolved yeast and milk, lemon rind, fruit, vanilla, butter and some flour. Knead on floured board, working in enough flour so dough is not sticky. Put in greased bowl. Cover with wet towel. Let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk. Punch down.

Divide dough into 1 1/4 pound balls. Cut each ball into 3 pieces. Roll each piece into long rope. Braid 3 ropes to fit greased bread pan. Let rise. Brush with beaten egg or yolk and cream. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Can be made into buns or loaves. If browns too fast, cover with wet brown paper or foil.
