Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1 Tbsp
  • salt - 2 tsp
  • water - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1/2 c
  • shortening - 1 item
  • dry mustard - 1 tsp
  • paprika - 2 tsp
  • pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • Worcestershire sauce - 1 Tbsp
  • chopped onion - 1/2 c
  • catsup - 1 c
  • chuck roast - 3 lb
  • buns - 1 item
  • small head cabbage, finely shredded - 1 item

How to make barbecued beef:

Trim fat from meat and brown in shortening in a Dutch oven. Combine all other ingredients, except cabbage and buns. Place meat in a roasting pan, pour sauce over it and cover. Bake at 325° for about 3 hours. Remove meat from oven and shred with two forks. Mix with sauce in pan.* When ready to serve, heat meat in sauce and serve on buns with shredded cabbage.

*Good to make ahead so flavors blend. Freezes well.
