Ingredients/Components

  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • flour - 1 c
  • brown sugar - 1 c
  • water - 2 Tbsp
  • nutmeg - 1/2 tsp
  • rolled oats
  • lemon juice - 1 tsp
  • white sugar - 1/2 c
  • plus 2 Tbsp - 1/2 c
  • allspice - 1/2 tsp
  • 8-10 large apples

How to make apple crisp:

Peel, core and dice the apples. You can use any type of apple that you like, but Cortlands, Gravensteins or Macs will do very well. Mix and match your apples to get different flavors. Place the apples in a deep 8 x 8 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the water and lemon juice over the apples. Cut up the 2 tablespoons of butter and place in among the apples.

Mix the spices with the white sugar and then sprinkle the mix over the apples. Combine the flour, brown sugar and rolled oats together. Cut the butter into the mix. You may need to mix this with your fingers to ensure that the butter is combined into the dry ingredients. Place over the top of the apples and bake covered in a 350° oven for 30-45 minutes until the top is crispy and brown. Let stand for 10 minutes or so and then serve hot.

You can serve this with ice cream for a special treat. This recipe is easy to adjust and make you own. Try adding some cranberries to the crisp or try using pears and apples or blueberries and apples. Just about any combination of fruit is great.

(If you really want to be adventuresome, add a few tablespoons of rum instead of water. This will give your apple crisp a different, but very nice flavor.)
