Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1/4 tsp
  • flour - 3/4 c
  • baking soda
  • boiling water - 3/4 c
  • shortening - 2 Tbsp
  • firmly packed brown sugar - 1/2 c
  • molasses - 1/2 c
  • ground cloves - 1/8 tsp
  • ground cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
  • ground ginger - 1/8 tsp
  • ground nutmeg - 1/8 tsp
  • egg yolk, beaten - 1 item

How to make shoo-fly pie:

Mix together first 7 ingredients; cut in shortening with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is crumbly; set aside. Obtain 9-inch pie shell; set aside. Combine 4 remaining ingredients. Alternate layers in pie shell of crumbs and liquid mixture, ending with crumbs as top layer. Bake at 450° for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° and bake about 20 minutes longer or until firm.
