Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- granulated sugar - 1 c
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- flour
- coconut
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 Tbsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- vinegar - 1 Tbsp
- shortening - 8 Tbsp
- plain flour
- butter flavoring - 1 tsp
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- butter or oleo - 1 c
How to make red velvet cake:
Frosting:3 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 tsp. vanilla1 1/2 pkg. coconut1 c. granulated sugar1 c. butter or oleo Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa; add paste to creamed mixture. Add flour and salt alternately with buttermilk and vanilla. Add vinegar and soda to mixture, but don't beat hard just blend. Bake in 2 (8-inch) greased and floured pans at 350° for 30 minutes. Layers may be split to make 4 layers.Frosting: Cook flour and milk on low heat until thick. Cool mixture. Cream sugar, butter or oleo and vanilla until fluffy. Add cooled flour mixture to cream mixture. Beat until it's like whipped cream. Spread between layers and on cake. Sprinkle with coconut, if desired.
