  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • brown sugar - 3 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 3/4 c
  • baking powder - 2 Tbsp
  • baking soda - 1/2 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • unbleached flour - 1 c
  • allspice - 1 tsp
  • whole wheat flour - 1 c
  • raisins, chopped - 1/2 c
  • cold butter or margarine - 1/2 c

How to make raisin scones:

In a mixing bowl, combine flours, sugar, baking powder, allspice, soda and salt. Cut butter into small pieces and work into flour with a pastry blender. Beat eggs with buttermilk and stir into mixture along with raisins. Turn dough out onto a floured board and knead for 2 minutes. Shape into 2 thick circles, 5 inches each in diameter. Cut each into quarters and place together in circles on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 400° oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until nicely browned. Makes 8 scones.
