Ingredients/Components

- cinnamon - 1 tsp
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- butter - 1 c
- water - 1 c
- nutmeg - 1 tsp
- soda - 2 tsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- all-purpose flour - 4 c
- raisins - 2 c
- nuts, chopped - 1 c
- cloves - 1 tsp
- allspice - 1 tsp
- cherry preserves - 1 c
- English walnuts - 1 lb
- dates - 1 lb
- blackberry jam - 1 c
- figs - 1 lb
- strawberry jam - 1 c
- eggs, separated and beaten - 6 item
- butter size of egg - 1 item
- Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk, beating well after each addition
How to make old fashioned jam cake:
Cream sugar and shortening; add beaten egg yolks, then jam and preserves. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. Add raisins and nuts; fold in beaten egg whites. Cook in three 9-inch pans, which have been greased and floured. Bake at 300° for 1 hour.Filling For Jam Cake:3 c. brown sugar1 c. water1 c. raisins1 lb. English walnuts1 lb. figs1 lb. dates butter (size of egg) Cook sugar and water until it spins a thread. Add raisins, figs, nuts and dates, which have been run through a food chopper. Cook until thick. Add a little water if too thick. Spread between layers and over cake.
