German chocolate cake
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 2 c
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- chopped pecans - 1 c
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- egg yolks - 3 item
- buttermilk - 1 c
- baking soda - 1 tsp
- boiling water - 1/2 c
- egg whites, stiffly beaten - 4 item
- Cool
- egg yolks unbeaten - 4 item
- margarine 1 stick - 1/4 lb
- German sweet chocolate - 1 pkg
- coconut 1 can
- butter, margarine or shortening - 1 c
- cake flour or 2 1/4 c
How to make german chocolate cake:
Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time and beat well after each. Add melted chocolate and vanilla. Mix well. Sift together salt, soda and flour. Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well. Beat until smooth. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into 3 (8 or 9-inch) cake layer pans. Line on bottoms with paper. Bake in moderate oven at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes. Cool. Fill layers and frost top and sides with Coconut-Pecan Filling. Serves 18 to 20.Coconut-Pecan Filling:1 c. evaporated milk1 c. sugar3 egg yolks1/4 lb. margarine (1 stick)1 tsp. vanilla1 1/2 c. coconut (1 can)1 c. chopped pecans Combine milk, sugar, egg yolks and margarine. Add vanilla. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thickened (about 12 minutes). Add coconut and chopped pecans. Beat until thick enough to spread.Recipe categories: Desserts, Cakes, Coconut.
