  • sugar - 2 c
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • chopped pecans - 1 c
  • pkg - 1 oz
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • butter - 1 c
  • egg yolks - 4 item
  • coconut
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • boiling water - 1/2 c
  • sifted cake flour
  • egg whites, stiffly beaten - 4 item
  • beaten egg yolks - 2 item
  • Cool

How to make german chocolate cake:

Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool. Cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each. Blend in vanilla and chocolate. Sift flour with soda and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating after each addition until smooth. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into three 9-inch layer pans, lined on the bottom with paper. Bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes. Cool. Frost top only.Coconut-Pecan Frosting:1 c. evaporated milk1 c. sugar2 beaten egg yolks1/2 c. butter1 tsp. vanilla1 1/3 c. coconut1 c. chopped pecans Combine the milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter and vanilla. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened, about 12 minutes. Add the coconut and pecans. Cool until thick enough to spread. Beat occasionally.
