Ingredients/Components

  • milk - 3/4 c
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • self-rising flour - 3/4 c
  • cornmeal - 1/4 c
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • to 4 green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch slices - 3 item
  • vegetable oil or bacon drippings or combination of both - 1 item

How to make fried green tomatoes:

Combine the first 5 ingredients; mix until smooth. Working in batches, dip tomato slices into batter; allow excess to drip back into bowl. Fry in 2 inches hot oil (375°) in a large, heavy skillet until browned, turning once carefully with tongs. Transfer to a colander to drain. Do not drain on paper towels, as this will make them soggy. Stand them up like wheels in the serving dish, instead of stacking them.
