Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 3/4 c
  • vanilla - 1/2 tsp
  • sour cream - 1/2 c
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • cold water - 4 Tbsp
  • soda - 1/2 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • shortening - 1/4 c
  • powdered sugar - 1 c
  • dash of salt - 1 item
  • unsweetened chocolate - 1 sq
  • unsweetened cocoa - 1/2 c
  • cream - 2 c
  • hot water - 2 Tbsp
  • cake flour - 1 c
  • unflavored gelatin
  • Let cool

How to make chocolate mousse cake:

In double boiler, melt chocolate over hot water (not boiling). Let cool. In bowl, mix flour, sugar, soda and salt. Add shortening and sour cream; beat 2 minutes. Add egg, vanilla, melted chocolate and hot water. Beat for 2 minutes. Pour in 2 (8-inch) pans. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool and refrigerate.

Mix cream, powdered sugar and cocoa in pan. Sprinkle gelatin over 4 tablespoons cool water; let stand 5 minutes to soften. Heat over hot water; stir to dissolve. Let cool. Line an 8-inch pan with plastic wrap. Add vanilla and salt to chilled cream mixture; beat until stiff to hold shape. Refrigerate 1/2 cup for later use. Stir and cool gelatin in remaining cream. Turn in cake pan and refrigerate for 2 hours. Place cake on plate. Invert mousse on top. Put other layer on top of that.Frosting:6 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips1/2 c. sour cream dash of salt Melt semi-sweet chocolate chips in double boiler. Add sour cream and dash of salt. With wooden spoon, beat frosting until spreading consistency. Frost entire cake. Decorate top of cake with remaining chocolate mousse or make rosettes. Mound chocolate bar in center of cake. Use vegetable peeler to make curls. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
