Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 2 c
  • eggs - 5 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk - 1 c
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • baking powder - 1/2 tsp
  • pinch of salt - 1 item
  • self-rising flour - 1/2 c
  • plain flour
  • Crisco - 1 c
  • stick oleo - 1 item

How to make caramel cake:

Caramel Icing:2 c. sugar1 c. milk pinch of salt1 stick oleo1 tsp. vanilla For cake layers mix sugar and Crisco by hand in mixer bowl. Put bowl on mixer and add eggs one at a time. Beat well after each egg. Add 1/2 of the flour; mix well. Add the milk and flavoring. Mix well. Add the remainder of the flour. Pour into 3 greased cake pans. Bake at 300° for 30 to 35 minutes.

Caramel Icing: For icing mix sugar, except 2 tablespoons, milk and salt together and heat. Brown the 2 tablespoons of sugar and pour in the hot milk mixture. Cook until soft ball stage. Add oleo and vanilla. Let cool a little. Beat until thick enough to spread on cake.
