Bread and butter pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 2 c
- celery seed - 2 tsp
- white vinegar - 2 c
- turmeric - 2 tsp
- canning salt - 1/4 c
- sliced cucumbers - 8 c
- dry mustard seed - 2 tsp
- to 5 onions, sliced - 4 item
- lots of crushed ice - 1 item
How to make bread and butter pickles:
Combine salt, cucumbers and onions. Weigh down with ice. Let stand 3 to 4 hours. Drain. Add all of the rest of the ingredients in a large pot. Add onion-cucumber mixture and bring to a boil. Cook 3 to 5 minutes until cucumbers look glassy. Pack into clean, hot jars. Process in boiling water bath 5 minutes. Yields 5 to 6 pints.Recipe categories: American, Condiments, etc., Vegetables.
