Ingredients/Components

  • sliced medium cucumbers - 4 qt
  • medium white onions, sliced optional - 6 item
  • green sweet peppers, chopped optional - 2 item
  • cloves garlic - 3 item
  • coarse medium salt - 1/3 c
  • sugar - 5 c
  • turmeric
  • celery seed
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • cider vinegar - 3 c

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Do not pare cucumbers! Slice thin. Add onions, peppers and whole garlic cloves. Add salt and cover with cracked ice. Mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over cucumber mixture. Heat just to a boil. Seal in hot, sterilized jars. Makes 8 pints.
