  • sugar - 1 Tbsp
  • salt
  • buttermilk - 2 c
  • baking powder - 3/4 tsp
  • baking soda - 1/4 tsp
  • vegetable oil - 3/4 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • unsifted self-rising flour - 5 c
  • active yeast - 1 pkg

How to make indian fry bread:

In small saucepan, heat buttermilk until bubbles form at the edge. Set aside and allow to cool, then stir in egg, oil, sugar and yeast until well blended. Set aside 5 minutes. In large bowl, stir together 5 cups of flour, salt, baking powder and soda. Make well in center of flour mixture. Pour buttermilk mixture into well. Stir until soft dough forms.

Knead on lightly floured surface; knead 8 to 10 times. Allow dough to rise until double. In large, heavy skillet, heat 1-inch of oil. Shape dough into 1 1/2-inch balls on a lightly floured surface. Roll out into 3 to 4-inch flat pieces. Drop into hot grease and fry on each side for 2 minutes.
