  • sugar - 4 c
  • vinegar - 4 c
  • chopped onions - 2 c
  • celery seed - 1 tsp
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric - 1 tsp
  • medium cucumbers, sliced - 4 qt

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Wash and slice cucumbers; put in 1/2 cup salt (either canning salt or plain salt, not iodized) and water to cover cucumbers. Let stand 3 hours. Combine all remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Drain cucumbers from salt mixture and place in vinegar solution. Bring to a boil again. Put in jars.
