Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/2 c
  • celery seed - 1 tsp
  • white vinegar - 5 c
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • turmeric - 1 tsp
  • large white onions - 8 item
  • to 30 medium cucumbers - 25 item

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Slice cucumbers and onions thin, pour salt over them and let stand 3 hours. Drain off all the liquid. Mix sugar, vinegar, mustard seed, turmeric and celery seed. Bring to a boil. Add cucumbers and onions. Heat to a boiling point but do not boil. Pack in hot jars and seal.
